Glenray building new homes for people living with Disability

Glenray’s latest project building 2 new supported independent living homes at Glenray Village in Kelso is well underway with the framework now erected. The new homes, a 4 bedroom home and a 1 bedroom unit, will be purpose built, by Hines Constructions to accessible living standards ensuring the home is accessible for people of all abilities. The accessible living standards, as outlined in National Construction Code (NCC) Livable Housing Design standards provide features like widened doorways and passageways, accessible bathrooms & showers able to accommodate wheelchair maneuverability, spacious bedrooms and wheelchair accessible handles and light switches.

The Australian Government identified a gap in suitable housing options for people living with disability, and earlier this year released their Australian Disability Strategy 2021-2031 that outline several key objectives one of which was for ‘People with disability to live in inclusive, accessible and well-designed homes and communities’

Glenray, as a local not for profit, has been committed to providing accessible disability accommodation for many years and continues to do so with this project well on the way to completion. ‘These new homes will be at the forefront of accessible living for the region and will be a welcome addition to our supported accommodation services’ says General Manager, Kath Graham. ‘Glenray is committed to people of all abilities having the right to access homes suitable for their needs, and to live the life they choose. These homes will provide this opportunity for more people in our community to access inclusive, accessible housing.’

It is expected to be completed in December this year and following in the theme of all homes at Glenray Village they will be named after Australian flora, with the house being named ‘Casuarina’ and the unit ‘Gungarra’.

Glenray village itself sits in a prime location atop the hill overlooking Bathurst with stunning views back towards Mt Panorama and provides a unique village atmosphere with gardens, sport and BBQ facilities and a community hall available to residents.
